hfncommendedSkyanalog’s mid-range G series is refreshed with MKII models boasting lower downforces and impedance, with little impact to output or tracking. We test the entry model...

It was tempting to kick off this review comparing cartridge manufacturer Skyanalog with its fellow Chinese brand BYD, which uses the tagline ‘the biggest car brand you’ve never heard of’. Sadly, Skyanalog’s UK distributor, Sound Design Distribution (SDD), beat us to the punchline by splashing ‘Possibly the most successful cartridge manufacturer you’ve never heard of’ across its webpage.

hfnoutstandingThe M series now has a new flagship – a fully discrete, fully balanced phono preamplifier with loading and gain options to accommodate a huge range of MM/MC pick-ups

As any experienced vinyl spinner will attest, your choice of phono preamplifier can have as great an impact on sound as the partnering turntable, arm and cartridge. Case in point, a few months ago Musical Fidelity’s Nu-Vista Vinyl 2 [HFN Feb ’24] made a big impression – and not only because of its bulk. The M8x Vinyl is closely related to that unit, albeit minus the nuvistor valve stage and equipped with a more practical housing. What the newest phono preamplifier from the company retains is a can-do attitude, offering support for a broad range of moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges. There’s also the dual-mono, fully balanced design, powered by a sizeable ‘Encapsulated Super Silent’ toroidal transformer. So while there are differences there are striking similarities too.

hfnoutstandingFirst seen at the UK Hi-Fi Show Live in 2024, dCS’s multi-component Varèse streaming solution aims to pitch digital audio into another league. Has it succeeded? You bet...

The French/American composer Edgard Varèse, from whom this latest dCS digital product takes its name, described his music as ‘organised sound’, challenging reactionary critics who likened his compositions to ‘no more than noise’ by saying ‘what is music but organised noises?’.

hfnvintageHeavyweight direct-drive turntables were packed with technology in the 1980s, as
illustrated by JVC’s QL-Y66F with its second-generation Electro-Dynamic Servo tonearm

In the vinyl heyday of the 1970s and 1980s, differences between UK-designed turntables, and those arriving from Japan, were stark. The suspended subchassis belt-drive decks, popular among British audiophiles, showcased increasing refinement of a ‘traditional’ technology. Japanese corporations, on the other hand, were making use of large research departments and development budgets to produce decks that could correct for off-centre records, direct-drive motors with almost unmeasurable wow and flutter, and control systems with huge torque that would revolutionise DJ-ing.

hfnoutstandingFlagship of the new KORE-derived Epikore range, DALI’s big floorstander boasts impressive tech and in-room presence

With not just so many ranges in its catalogue, but also many models in those ranges, it’s hardly surprising that Danish speaker company DALI is no stranger to the concept of trickle-down technology. After all, once the development cost of a new component, or an entire loudspeaker, has been spent, why not spread the love by finding ways of carrying over that thinking to other products?

hfncommendedBargains are something we like, so an all-valve pre/power combination for under £7000 is worthy of all our attention – say ‘hello’ to Fezz Audio’s Sagita Prestige and Titania

Baffled by its name, I assumed Polish manufacturer ‘Fezz’ took it from its distinctive toroidal transformer covers, which reflect the shape of the famous Moroccan hat if not the city itself. Here was a valve amplifier with the full complement of toroidal transformers – not all that common with tubes – but there’s even more novelty to the Sagita Prestige preamplifier (£3499) and Titania power amplifier (£3495). Eastern European price advantages are just the start.

hfncommended‘Big sounds’ are promised from this Nordic brand’s slender Signature speaker range that includes floorstanding, standmount and AV-ready on-wall models. Is the Sig 5 a star?

If you have a preconceived notion of System Audio, chances are it’s been formed by its Silverback range of active, wireless loudspeakers. Occupying the top tier in the Danish manufacturer’s catalogue, models including the Silverback 60.2 and Silverback 40.2 [HFN May ’21 and Aug ’21] combine DSP-based crossovers, DACs and integrated amplification, with cable-free transmission via the WiSA standard. Add in the app control and room EQ and there is, to put it bluntly, a lot going on in the Silverbacks – something which can’t be said of System Audio’s new Signature series.

hfnoutstandingBoasting a new ‘design language’, upgraded DAC stage and preamp and onboard storage options, this flagship streamer finds Matrix Audio aiming higher than ever

When a manufacturer announces a new model, it’s tempting to compare it to what’s come before, looking for where upgrades have been made. And, yes, the MS-1 from China’s Matrix Audio does carry on technology and design features from the company’s earlier network players, including the Element X2 and X2 Pure [HFN Oct ’22 and Dec ’23] and entry-level X-Sabre 3[HFN Apr ’22]. That said, you only need lay eyes on the MS-1, with its full-width chassis, large, colourful front-panel display and £9600 price tag, to realise it’s also something different.

hfnoutstandingNow in its ninth iteration over nearly 35 years in production, the Q series gets a ‘MAT makeover’ headed by the Q11 tower

KEF launched its Q series Meta loudspeakers toward the end of 2024 with plenty of fanfare, but to any hi-fi enthusiast with half an eye on this brand, the announcement came as no surprise. We’d already seen how the introduction of the ‘revolutionary’ Meta Absorption Material Technology (MAT) on KEF’s LS50 Meta [HFN Jun ’21] was followed by Meta updates of its Blade [HFN May ’22], Reference [HFN Jun ’23] and then R series [HFN Jan ’24]. At the same time, KEF’s bottom-of-the-rung Q range was last updated in 2017. So, with hindsight, the Q series Meta, topped by the £1999 Q11 Meta floorstander seen here, is about as expected as anything gets in hi-fi.

hfnoutstandingCrafted on the shores of Lake Zurich for nearly 40 years, Piega speakers are famous for their innovative ‘ribbon’ driver designs. Its Coax series is now launched in ‘Gen2’ guise...

Instantly recognisable, Switzerland’s Piega has produced its ‘ribbon’ loudspeakers for nearly four decades. Building on the company founded by Leo Greiner (the other founder, Kurt Scheuch, brought technical chops to the table), it’s a manufacturer that takes pride in its family ownership. Greiner’s sons Alex and Manuel still manage the business from Horgen on the shores of Lake Zurich, where production is situated.
