Although the CS 8.3 S marks the beginning of a new product line, control is still facilitated by AVM’s long-running RC X app [see screenshot, below]. Free to download for iOS and Android devices, what this controller lacks in visual polish it recovers in its straightforward operation and wealth of features. User settings, more easily adjusted here than through the amp’s front panel display/buttons, are comprehensive. Tone controls can be set or bypassed in the ‘Audio’ menu, alongside MM/MC phono configuration. Also, individual inputs can be trimmed for level, renamed or hidden if desired, while display/power management settings are also provided.

For music playback, the RC X app can select any of the CS 8.3 S’s wired inputs, and browse files on USB drives and network shares. It also offers full programming of CD replay, an Internet radio portal, and integration of the Qobuz (inc. Connect), Tidal, Spotify and Highresaudio streaming platforms. Also note this streaming amp can be driven via Roon or Apple AirPlay.
