AVID Relveo/Altus V2 turntable/arm Avid’s ancestry
While AVID (A Very Interesting Design) was formed in 1995, its turntables came about courtesy of an enthusiast unhappy with the available choice and thinking ‘I could do better’. That man was Conrad Mas, who followed up by spending many years getting to grips with the ‘whys and wherefores’ of turntable sound. He ended up focusing on the control of both environmental and playback-induced vibration through an understanding of both material properties and engineering design. This is why AVID makes as much as possible in-house, and has an enviable reputation for the quality and finish of its products.

AVID’s first turntable was the Acutus [HFN Jun ’99], a model that’s evolved continually in the quarter century since. The introduction of a DSP-based PSU for the Acutus SP [HFN Sep ’10] was a major step, and this has gradually spread across the range, right up to the Relveo [see picture above]. AVID has also been keen to offer a complete analogue audio system from ‘groove to ear’ and now counts turntables, arms and cartridges, phono preamps, amplifiers, loudspeakers, stands and cables in its portfolio.
