Mola Mola Perca power amp Apex Class D

While Mola Mola’s co-founder Bruno Putzeys was also the brains behind the popular Hypex, Ncore and Eigentakt [HFN Oct ’22] Class D solutions, we had to wait for the Kaluga monoblocks [HFN Aug ’17] before seeing Ncore implemented by the man who designed the technology in the first place. Although other OEM Class D modules are still to catch up with the original Hypex UcD’s immunity to speaker loading, the latter Ncore and Eigentakt solutions maintain Bruno’s work at the forefront of Class D.

Where some Class D amp system frequency responses can be hugely influenced by undulations in the speaker’s load impedance, that’s not the case with the Perca. Ncore’s novel compensation offers a vanishingly low (~5mohm) output impedance [orange trace, inset Graph, and note 1kHz to 100kHz scale], so while the Perca has a very subtle treble roll-off, its response varies by less than ±0.1dB from 5Hz-50kHz driving loads from open-circuit [grey trace], 8ohm [black], 4ohm [red], 2ohm [blue] and 1ohm [green]. Very few amplifiers, regardless of ‘Class’, are so unaffected by speaker load. PM
