Piega Premium 301 Gen2 loudspeaker Piega's roots
Founded by Kurt Scheuch and Leo Greiner in 1984, Piega’s first loudspeakers – the Arlecchino, Capriccio, Arabella and Elektra – began arriving two years later. All were hand-built and incorporated a ‘ribbon tweeter’, this isodynamic driver concept remaining part of the Piega ethos to this day. In 1991, the company relocated to a dedicated site in Horgen, a town on Lake Zurich in Switzerland, where it is still situated (with another facility opening in nearby Wädenswil in 2002), and in 1997 it debuted its first speakers with extruded aluminium cabinets. Piega says these were initially ‘ridiculed’ by audiophiles, but it has continued to favour the material for its rigidity, stability and design flexibility – all its current speakers, including the entry-level Ace series, use alloy enclosures.
The full range is far from homogenous, however. There are wireless versions, incorporating WiSA technology, of the Ace and Premium series, plus centre channel and ‘installation’ speakers for home theatre use. Meanwhile, Piega’s Master loudspeakers are line-source types, the flagship option being a twin-cabinet design with a separate, six-driver ‘bass tower’.
